I was recently browsing my etsy favorites and decided to share some of these fantastic nature photos. Here is a collection that I absolutely adore! All of the photos were taken by photographers who sell their work on Etsy.

Here, also is a recent poem of mine, that I think, fitting with the photos:

Sunrise

Winds cannot whittle away this morning, blowing through my waking window
sweet, they only sing me from sleep and bring to me, birds I’ve heard in other dreamy dawns.
Joyful, thinking of friends to meet, along the streets or on soft summer lawns,
watching – like a magic trick, waiting for surprise,
now orange, pink, red upon my bed,
a world of dazzling skies!

This past weekend was the ever eclectic, wild and crazy Fremont Fair, located in the Fremont district of Seattle, WA.

There was certainly something for everyone, young and old alike. This street fair is spread out over several blocks, that are open only to foot traffic for the entire 3 days, which began Friday June 21 and ran through Sun the 23rd.

There was a super cool Solstice parade Saturday, which included a barrage of naked bicyclists, all of which were body painted! Along with the usual colorful characters and marching bands. This fair also has a huge art car display, which was a highlight for me. Here are few pictures from the weekend, I have included one of my jewelry booth. If you haven’t attended the Fremont fair, I suggest you get your tail down there next year, especially for those of you living in the Northwest!

Today I want to pay tribute to my favorite place to grocery shop in Portland. Though there are a myriad of food stores to choose from including the mom and pop ethnic stores, I still have just one store that I believe is absolutely stellar in what they bring to the consumer.

My number one choice is New Season’s grocery store, founded in 1999 this company has grown from one store to it’s current number of eleven. This company is all about local, sustainable and organic, supporting many northwest farmers and companies. As a shopper, I am beyond thrilled to find that more than 90% of the produce is organic, something that is very important to me. Another thing that makes them awesome is the fact that they have meat and poultry that is grass fed, as well as antibiotic and hormone free to choose from, got to love that! A few other points worth mentioning are their fabulous deli, bakery and nutrition depts, oh and did I mention that they contribute, after taxes, 10% of profits to a variety of local organizations, through grants and donation – good stuff!

I will just close in saying that this store totally rocks in all areas and they just happen to also be the most friendly store in Portland!

I can’t believe that time of year is upon us once again, I’m definitely feeling the crispness in the morning air. Though I’m always sad to see our summer season over, I do so love the Fall, with all of it’s spectacular colors. Among the wondrous things about fall are pumpkins!
Did you know pumpkins are in the Curcurbita family along with squash and cucumbers. Besides eating the inner meat, and roasting the seeds, you may also eat the gorgeous yellow flower blooms! Lightly saute them in olive oil, and season as you like, super simple!
Early American settlers would hollow out pumpkins, then fill them with milk, honey and spices and bake them, according to some historians that was our country’s first pumpkin pie! Lastly the largest pumpkin on record weighed a whopping 1,469 lbs!

I am planning to bake fresh pumpkin pie this year, and will be heading to my local farmers market soon to purchase a few baking pumpkins, can’t wait!

In honor of the changing season, into Fall, here are a few poems to enjoy!

W. S. Merwin (1927 – Present)

September Plowing

For seasons the walled meadow
south of the house built of its stone
grows up in shepherd’s purse and thistles
the weeds share April as a secret
finches disguised as summer earth
click the drying seeds
mice run over rags of parchment in August
the hare keeps looking up remembering
a hidden joy fills the songs of the cicadas

two days’ rain wakes the green in the pastures
crows agree and hawks shriek with naked voices
on all sides the dark oak woods leap up and shine
the long stony meadow is plowed at last and lies
all day bare
I consider life after life as treasures
oh it is the autumn light

that brings everything back in one hand
the light again of beginnings
the amber appearing as amber

William Butler Yeats (1865 – 1939)

The Falling Of The Leaves

AUTUMN is over the long leaves that love us,
And over the mice in the barley sheaves;
Yellow the leaves of the rowan above us,
And yellow the wet wild-strawberry leaves.
The hour of the waning of love has beset us,
And weary and worn are our sad souls now;
Let us patt, ere the season of passion forget us,
With a kiss and a tear on thy drooping brow.

CA Guilfoyle· Jun 23

Orchard

Drops of reddish rain on skins
slid dripping, pooled in leaves curled
Steps on stems break, dawn’s awakening
Little wrecks of nests unhinge
twine thru twigs

Ladders leaned
steps for splintered fingers
Blossomy buds plucked thru rungs
Breezy days go shining

Apple worms burrow
for beaking birds
Bees have all flown homeward

In September’s slanted sun
we gather sweetest reds
for pressing

CA Guilfoyle· Aug 28

Salmon stream

The perfect slanting of sun
tundra cotton leaning northward
salmon spawning homeward
golden grass – waved in winds
The cast of red autumn’s spell

A few days ago my husband and I got up very early, it was an exceptionally warm and sunny morning here in Portland.

We decided to drive about 45 minutes south of here to Woodburn Oregon,  to checkout the annual tulip festival. We arrived shortly after 9:00 AM, the sky was a gorgeous blue and played a perfect backdrop to the amazing array of colorful tulips.  The words, heavenly, blissful and intoxicating all come to mind, when I think of being there that day, as it is truly magnificent and I highly recommend going there! I took particular note, to watch other people and to really look at their faces, they were beaming, grinning, happy, children were elated and I looked at my husband and said, “this place is freakin magic”.  So if you want to put a little spark in your life or spring in your step, check out this truly magical slice of heaven!

Happy spring!

I’m so excited that Spring has decided to arrive a little early this year and as far as I’m concerned the earlier the better! We have what is considered to be a temperate climate here in Portland, Oregon. We enjoy (don’t always use this adjective) our fair share of rain during the winter and spring months, but of course this is why we have such lush green vegetation all around us. Because of our climate we can grow a huge variety of plants, which is certainly right up my alley!

When I moved to my current house, I created a good size flower bed just outside my studio window, where I am able to view it perfectly. I have a nice mix of perennial flowers and herbs and I plug in some flowering annuals every year as well. Currently in full bloom, there are muscari or grape hyacinth, daffodils, blue hyacinth, snow drops, pansies and primroses. I’m just so thrilled to once again be able to look out my window and see some color again. Later this month I will be attending the Woodburn tulip festival, where many acres of various tulips will be in full bloom, it is truly spectacular!! The pictures below were taken there and at Skagit valley.

With valentines day quickly approaching I am reminded that love is in the air!  So many of us celebrate V-Day in one way or another, though it does seem that many have mixed feelings about it, depending upon whether or not they have a sweetheart. Well I say fooey on that, you don’t need to have a sweetie to revel in the magic of the day.
When I was a child I use to make hand painted valentine cards and give them to my family and friends. I remember the utter joy I had creating them and then seeing people light up when they received them. To this day I still send out valentine cards to family and friends and in this way I am sending my love out to those I love and care about, not just to my sweetheart.

With all of these thoughts of love in mind,  I am also reminded of compassion and the importance of practicing this daily. I would like to take this opportunity to say that my heart goes out to the people of Haiti during this time of unimaginable sadness. I believe it is so important for people around the world to help the people in Haiti and now is the time to do so. Below is a list of stellar relief organizations where you can make donations. If you have already done so, the people of Haiti thank you!
